Our mission is to increase awareness of the impact of the cost of cancer care on patients' quality of life. We recognize that the cost burden of cancer varies by person and that a wide host of issues can cause financial toxicity. One patient may have high out-of-pocket costs whereas another may have a decreased ability to work and maintain income. Instead of simply measuring out-of-pocket costs or sick days, we aim to measure how these different cost parameters impact patients' daily lives. We believe that in the same way patients are informed about side effects of therapies and how these might impact their lives, they should also be informed about their costs of care. Integrating information about financial toxicity into cancer care decision making will take us one step closer to the ultimate goal of a truly personalized cancer treatment.
